Is JRL Good? An Honest Guide to JRL Clippers, Trimmers and Dryers

What JRL is, what its clippers, trimmers and dryers do well, what to check before you buy, and which JRL tool suits which job.

JRL Onyx Black Cordless Clipper at MV Hair & Beauty, Adelaide

Yes, JRL is a good brand for barbers and serious home users. Its core clippers pair Smart-Clip motor control with cool-running fade blades, and the newer Onyx, 3000C and JRL x Lamborghini Diamante models add long cordless runtimes, brushless motors or a compact build. This guide covers what JRL does well, what to check before you buy, and which JRL tool suits which kind of work.

Who makes JRL?

JRL clippers, trimmers, shavers and dryers are made by JRL Professional. In the United States the brand sells through JRL USA, which describes itself as the official U.S. source for JRL Professional tools. Here in Australia, MV Hair & Beauty stocks genuine JRL from authorised Australian distributors.

Local stock matters with electrical tools. The JRL Onyx clipper we sell comes with a Reset IQ charging dock fitted with a certified Australian/New Zealand plug, and the Forte Pro 2020H dryer is a 240V model for Australia and New Zealand.

What JRL does well

  • Motor control. Smart-Clip technology senses blade resistance and adjusts the motor so the clipper does not stall or pull in thick hair.
  • Fade blades. The FreshFade 2020C and Onyx clippers carry fade blades that adjust from 0.5 to 3.5mm. The Diamante clipper's blade goes from 0 to 3.0mm and can be zero-gapped with the tool in the box.
  • Runtime. The Onyx clipper runs for up to 5 hours on a full charge, and its Reset IQ mode helps the battery return to a full charge every time. The Diamante clipper runs for up to 4 hours.
  • Matching sets. Clippers, trimmers, the Onyx SF Pro foil shaver and Forte Pro dryers come in matching finishes, from Onyx black and Ghost White to the limited-edition JRL x Lamborghini black and yellow.
  • Low-maintenance dryers. The Forte Pro 2020H has an auto-clean function that runs the motor in reverse to clear its washable filter.

What to check before you buy

No brand gets everything right, and a few JRL details catch people out.

  • Runtime varies a lot by model. The compact 3000C runs for up to 2 hours; the Onyx runs for up to 5. If you cut all day without a dock at the chair, that gap matters more than any other spec.
  • Blades are model-specific. The 2025C Diamante clipper blade fits the Diamante clipper only, and JRL says it does not fit the Onyx or other JRL clippers. Check the compatibility note before ordering any blade.
  • Limited editions are partly about the look. The JRL x Lamborghini and gold editions bring statement finishes. The Diamante also brings real spec changes, so compare it with the Onyx on specs, not looks alone.
  • Specs differ between markets. JRL's US listings quote US plugs and voltages, and some figures differ from Australian stock. Go by the Australian listing for the tool you are buying.
  • Check what is in the box. A duo is a clipper and trimmer; trios add a foil shaver or a dryer. Each of our listings spells out the kit.

Which JRL should you buy?

For a busy barbershop

Start with the Onyx clipper. Five hours of runtime, ten guards and a dual-speed motor make it the easiest all-day pick. Pair it with the Onyx trimmer for line-ups; both sit in our JRL Onyx tools and kits range, along with trios that add the SF Pro shaver.

For the classic JRL feel

The FreshFade 2020C is the original JRL FreshFade clipper: Smart-Clip, a five-position lever with fine adjustment between positions, and corded or cordless use. It comes in gold or silver with the matching 2020T trimmer. See every model in our JRL hair clippers and JRL trimmers.

For mobile barbers

The 3000C Compact weighs 253g, runs a 7,800 RPM brushless motor and ships with six guards from 1.5 to 13mm. Its 2-hour runtime suits shorter sessions or a second clipper in the bag.

For a premium chair

The JRL x Lamborghini Diamante adds a brushless clipper and trimmer at up to 8,200 RPM in black or yellow. We compare it spec by spec in JRL Diamante vs Onyx, and you can shop the duos and trios in the JRL x Lamborghini range.

For stylists and salons

JRL's Forte Pro and Vortice.1 dryers cover everything from a 2,150W salon dryer to a 370g lightweight. Our guide to the best JRL hair dryers in Australia compares them, or browse all JRL hair dryers.

For home haircuts

One good clipper with a full set of guards does most of the work. The Onyx and 2020C both come with ten guards, which makes even, repeatable lengths easier at home. Add a trimmer for necklines and edges.

Keep your JRL tools cutting well

  1. Brush the hair out of the blade after every cut.
  2. Oil the blade regularly; a dry blade runs hotter and wears faster.
  3. After zero-gapping, check the blade alignment before it touches skin.
  4. Replace a blade when it starts pulling. Genuine blades, guards, chargers and docks are in our JRL blades, guards and parts range.
