Natural Look makes three different products for blonde hair and they do three different jobs. Ice Blonde tones yellow out. Rose Blonde tints pink in. Colourance protects colour and, in its tinted versions, tops it up. Buy the wrong one and you either get no toning at all or a shade you did not ask for. Here is how to pick.
The two-minute answer
- Brassy, yellow or dull blonde, grey or white hair: Silver Screen Ice Blonde Shampoo and Ice Blonde Conditioner.
- You want a pastel pink or lilac tint on blonde, white or grey hair: Rose Blonde Shampoo.
- Salon colour you want to keep looking fresh: Colourance Shine Enhancing Shampoo and Conditioner, or one of the tinted Colourance shampoos.
Silver Screen Ice Blonde: the anti-yellow line
Who it is for: lightened, highlighted, colour-treated, grey or white hair that has drifted warm.
How it works: the shampoo and conditioner both carry concentrated violet and blue pigments. Violet cancels yellow and blue works on orange-leaning warmth, so Ice Blonde reaches a little further into brassy tones than a plain purple shampoo. The result is a cooler, cleaner blonde or a brighter grey.
How to use it: once or twice a week in place of your regular shampoo. Leave the shampoo on for one to three minutes; start short and work up, because pigment builds and very light or porous hair can go lilac. Follow with the Ice Blonde Conditioner, or with a plain conditioner on days you want moisture without more tone.
The extra step: the Ice Blonde Detangler is a leave-in porosity equaliser with the same pigments. It evens out how the hair takes tone, which is exactly what bleached ends need, and it makes combing wet hair painless.
Rose Blonde: a tint, not a toner
Who it is for: blonde, white or grey hair that you want to push toward rose, pink or soft violet.
How it works: Rose Blonde deposits rose and violet pastel pigment with each wash. It is colour-enhancing, it slows fade on pastel colour, and it is free from SLS, ammonia and peroxide, so it will not lighten or damage. It also will not fix brassiness. If your hair is yellow, tone it with Ice Blonde first, then play with Rose Blonde.
How to use it: the lighter the hair, the more it shows. Use it once a week for a whisper of pink, more often for a stronger pastel.
Colourance: protect the colour you paid for
Who it is for: anyone with salon colour, blonde or otherwise, whose main problem is fade rather than warmth.
How it works: the Colourance Shine Enhancing shampoo and conditioner are pH balanced to protect against colour fade and the moisture loss that comes with regular colouring, and they add shine on coloured and uncoloured hair alike. The mistakes we see
- Using Ice Blonde every wash. Pigment builds. Twice a week is the ceiling for most hair.
- Expecting Rose Blonde to tone. It tints. Yellow hair plus pink pigment equals peach.
- Skipping conditioner. Lightened hair is porous and dry. Every toning wash needs a conditioner or a treatment behind it. The Intensive Reconstructive Treatment is the one to keep in the shower.
- Chasing orange with violet. Violet cancels yellow. If the hair is pulling orange, it needs a blue-based product or a colourist. Ice Blonde's blue pigment helps at the edges; it will not rescue a bad lift.
