How to choose a professional hair dryer

Motor. Brushless and digital motors spin fast: the Pro-One Aerolite and Evonic run at 110,000 RPM, the Wahl Vanquish Compact at 101,000 RPM and the JRL Forte Pro at up to 100,000 RPM. The Wahl Power Dry and Speedy Supalite use AC motors, the classic salon dryer build.

Power and settings. The dryers above range from 1600 W on the Vanquish Compact to 2200 W on the Speedy Supalite. Look for at least three heat settings and a cold shot button to set the style once it's dry.

Weight. If you blow-dry all day, every gram counts. The Wahl Vanquish Compact, Pro-One Aerolite and Pro-One Evonic each weigh under 300 g.

Ionic and ceramic. Ionic and ceramic dryers are designed for a smoother, shinier-looking finish with less visible frizz. The Pro-One dryers, Parlux 3800 and Speedy Supalite list both, the JRL Forte Pro has an ion generator and the Wahl Power Dry uses tourmaline.

Attachments. A concentrator nozzle focuses the airflow for smooth, sleek blow-drys; a diffuser spreads it out for curls and waves. Check what comes in the box before you buy.

Hair dryer FAQs

What hair dryers do salons use?

Salons usually look for a dryer that handles back-to-back blow-drys, with several heat and speed settings and a cold shot. Our best sellers include the Pro-One Aerolite and Evonic, the Wahl Power Dry and Vanquish Compact, the Parlux 3800, the JRL Forte Pro and the Speedy Supalite: compare them in the table above.

Which hair dryers are lightweight?

Of the dryers in the table above, the Wahl Vanquish Compact, Pro-One Aerolite and Pro-One Evonic each weigh under 300 g on their published specs. The Parlux 3800 is listed at 500 g.

Should I choose the Pro-One Aerolite or the Evonic?

On their published specs they're very close: both run a 110,000 RPM brushless motor at 1800 W, with ionic and ceramic technology, a diffuser and regular and wide nozzles, and both weigh under 300 g. Our Pro-One Aerolite vs Evonic guide compares them side by side.
